'Tadej was advancing, aiming for triumph, yet Julian outshone him significantly in Quebec, resulting in Tadej's worst one-day performance in three years' - Pogacar experiences significant setback in Quebec race
Tadej Pogacar Aims for Double Victory at UCI Road World Championships
Tadej Pogacar, the four-time Tour de France winner, is set to defend his road race title and attempt an ambitious double by vying for the time trial victory at the UCI Road World Championships later this month. The Slovenian cyclist, who is supported by a "super team" that includes Primož Roglič and other strong teammates, will first test his form at the Grand Prix de Montréal before departing for Rwanda.
However, Pogacar's ambitions were thwarted at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec, where he finished in 29th place. Despite launching several attacks, Pogacar was unable to make a decisive impact on the race, marking his worst one-day result in three years.
Julian Alaphilippe, of UAE Team Emirates-XRG, claimed victory with a solo victory, a testament to his return to his very best form. Pavel Sivakov, Pogacar's teammate, came closest to toppling Alaphilippe, securing second place. Despite his efforts, Sivakov could not follow Alaphilippe in the last steep kicker of the race.
UAE Team Emirates-XRG's race strategy largely went to plan, despite not delivering a win for Pogacar. The team's focus was on positioning Pogacar for the race win, even in the final kilometers. Pogacar's post-Tour preparation involved a less form-focused training block, with a break followed by home training in Slovenia.
Pogacar finished 26 seconds behind Alaphilippe in the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec. The Slovenian cyclist, however, remains undeterred and plans to challenge Remco Evenepoel for the rainbow jersey in the time trial at the UCI Road World Championships. Pogacar intends to race both the road race and the time trial at the event.
The UCI Road World Championships in Rwanda are just nine days away, and Pogacar has been on his time trial bike more than usual in preparation for the event. His main goal for the final stretch of the season is to peak at the UCI Road World Championships, where he aims to put Evenepool and other strong specialists to the test.
The next race for Pogacar is the Grand Prix de Montréal, where he will have another chance to test his form before the world championships.
