Tadej Pogacar Gears Up for UCI Road World Championships

Slovenian cycling sensation Tadej Pogacar is set to compete in the UCI Road World Championships later this week, following a series of races in Canada. Pogacar, who won the road race world title in Zurich last year, is hopeful of another strong performance in Rwanda.

The Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec, held earlier this month, was not Pogacar's best outing. His legs weren't at their peak, but he managed to find some rhythm, ultimately finishing in 29th place. However, the Slovenian national coach Uroš Murn remains optimistic, stating that the circuits for both races in Rwanda are expected to suit Pogacar.

Before the Canadian WorldTour races, Pogacar expressed concerns about his end-of-season form. To counteract this, he completed an extra block of training during the races, aiming to peak for the World Championships. His efforts seemed to pay off, as he raced well at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec and regained his motivation and confidence.

Pogacar's worst result in a one-day race this year was at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec, but he intentionally gifted victory to his teammate Brandon McNulty in Montréal to focus on regaining his form. This strategic move allowed him to concentrate on preparing for the World Championships.

Meanwhile, other riders have shown impressive form at the Vuelta a España, including Tom Pidcock (Great Britain), Giulio Ciccone and Giulio Pellizzari (Italy), Juan Ayuso (Spain), and Julian Alaphilippe (France). Pogacar's biggest rival in the time trial is expected to be Remco Evenepoel.

In the elite men's road race on September 28, Pogacar will face competition not only from his rivals but also from his UAE Team Emirates-XRG teammates, particularly Isaac del Toro (Mexico). Pogacar will focus on the elite men's time trial on Sunday.

Pogacar expressed his love for racing in Canada, despite being sick all week leading up to the Canadian races and unable to do all the planned training. He is now happy with his current form after the Canadian races and is looking forward to the challenges ahead in Rwanda. Alongside Pogacar, the Slovenian national team traveled to the UCI Road World Championships 2022, ready to compete for top honours.
