Tadej Pogacar extraordinarily outruns Mathieu van der Poel in a thrilling bunch sprint to secure the initial stage victory at the Critérium du Dauphiné.

Ready to rumble! Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates snatched the opening stage victory of the Criterium du Dauphine from Mathieu van der Poel in a thrilling sprint finish, leaving the cycling world on the edge of their seats.

In a surprising turn of events, Pogacar and fellow titans, Jonas Vingegaard, Remco Evenepoel, and Santiago Buitrago, broke away from the pack with just 6km to go, setting the stage for an epic showdown.

Van der Poel led the charge towards the finish line, but Pogacar timed his attack to perfection, storming past the Dutchman to take the top spot. Vingegaard followed closely in second, pushing van der Poel into third.

The day's competition was filled with unexpected performances, demonstrating that this Criterium would be far from predictable. Anticipation for an exhilarating Tour de France in a month's time is now at an all-time high!

How it Went Down

The race saw several daring breakaways right from the get-go, with Paul Ourselin and Pierre Thierry extending their advantage to 4 minutes ahead of the peloton within the first 15km. This two-man group maintained their lead for the first 100km, only reducing their advantage to 2 minutes and 15 seconds following a strong push from Lidl-Trek.

As the peloton closed in, the breakaway was reeled in, leaving Thierry to ride solo with a minimal 15-second advantage. Fred Wright then made a move to join Thierry, only to be dropped soon afterward. The peloton eventually caught up, leaving Wright as the lone rider in front.

The final categorized climb of the day, a 600m steep ascent, saw Axel Laurence take the lead for Ineos Grenadiers, but it was Vingegaard who launched the decisive attack with 5.5km to go. Pogacar, van der Poel, and Buitrago followed closely, with Evenepoel bringing up the rear.
