Food banks in Saxony are facing growing financial pressure as costs for energy, rent, and transport continue to climb. Despite a rise in donations and volunteer support, structural challenges remain a serious issue for these organisations in 2024.
Last year, Saxony’s food banks distributed nearly 900,000 food collections across their network. Volunteers—over 1,000 in total—worked to rescue supplies and assist those struggling with rising living costs.
Large-scale donations reached around 1,162 metric tons in 2024, with more industrial partners contributing significant food supplies. Yet these one-off contributions have not been enough to cover ongoing shortfalls. A major setback came with the loss of a warehouse in Dresden’s Ostragehege district. The incident cost the network roughly €250,000, adding to existing financial strain. No new logistics centre has been built to replace it, leaving storage and distribution under pressure.
The combination of higher operational costs and lost infrastructure has left Saxony’s food banks in a difficult position. While donations and volunteer numbers remain strong, the need for long-term solutions to storage and funding gaps is clear.
