Syria's ruling government agrees on a ceasefire with the Druze community of Suwayda province

In the heart of Syria, the city of Suwayda and its surrounding villages have been rocked by renewed violence, following a tenuous ceasefire agreement.

The truce, announced jointly by Syrian state media and a Druze religious leader on July 16, 2025, had initially brought a semblance of peace to the region after months of clashes between Druze fighters and Bedouin armed groups. However, the recent resurgence of fighting has cast doubt on the agreement's longevity.

The escalation in violence has been accompanied by a series of airstrikes, attributed to Israel, which have targeted key Syrian government institutions in Damascus. Despite repeated requests for comment, the Israeli government has not officially acknowledged or confirmed these strikes.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement, confirmed a ceasefire with Syria, though he did not elaborate on the nature of Israel's involvement. The strikes, if confirmed, mark a significant escalation in Israel's role in the Syrian conflict.

The Syrian government has been largely silent on the matter, with no official comment on the strikes attributed to Israel. The United States, however, has expressed support for the ceasefire, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledging progress towards an agreement.

The violence in Suwayda poses a significant threat to Syria's new rulers' ability to consolidate control of the country. The agreement includes the deployment of security checkpoints in the city, a move aimed at maintaining order and preventing further outbreaks of violence.

The clashes have been ongoing for days, with Syrian government troops attacked upon arrival in the Suwayda region by Druze militias. The fighting has resulted in numerous casualties, with over 300 deaths reported by a monitoring group, following the collapse of a previous truce.

On Wednesday, Israel struck the Syrian Defense Ministry headquarters in Damascus, killing one person and injuring 18, according to Syrian officials. Another strike occurred near the presidential palace in the hills outside of Damascus. The Syrian Defense Ministry, via state news agency SANA, has blamed outlawed groups in Suwayda for breaching the truce.

As the situation in Suwayda remains volatile, the international community continues to watch closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

  1. The escalation in the Syrian conflict, as evidenced by the recent airstrikes on the Syrian Defense Ministry headquarters and the presidential palace, raises concerns about the longevity of the ceasefire agreement between Syria and Israel.
  2. The ongoing violence in Syria, particularly in Suwayda and its surrounding villages, has significant political implications, with the focus of global news shifting towards the stability of the new ruling regime and the potential impact of war-and-conflicts on the region's future.
