A violent confrontation erupted in Damascus, Syria, as the Israeli Air Force unleashed a barrage on a residential building. Reports from the state news agency, Sana, confirmed that three individuals, including an elderly woman, sustained injuries during the incident. The Syrian human rights group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, disclosed that two rockets were responsible for the devastating impact, sparking fires in the destroyed structure and nearby residences.
The Israeli military has claimed that their attack targeted the PIJ (Palestinian Islamic Jihad) headquarters, contending that the command center played a crucial role in orchestrating terrorist operations against the State of Israel. However, a representative from the PIJ refuted these claims, asserting that an empty building was the actual target.
The PIJ shares a history with Hamas, as both organizations collaborated to launch a terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. In recent years, Israel has frequently targeted sites in Syria, often with Iranian connections.
In response to the strike, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz emphasized his government’s unwavering stance on Islamic terrorism, indicating that there would be no safe haven for such activities against Israel in Damascus or elsewhere. A stern warning was extended to the President of the Syrian transitional government, Ahmed al-Sharaa, with Katz delivering a chilling message, "wherever terrorist activities against Israel are organized, you will see the planes of the air force flying over you."
