Rowdy Response: Israel Strikes Back After Syrian Attack

Syria's artillery fire met with Israel's retaliation through counterattacks

In a heated exchange, Israel has retaliated against Syria following an attack from the neighboring country. The Israeli army announced air strikes in the south of Syria in response to projectiles intruding into Israeli territory during the night. Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, pointed the finger at the Syrian transitional government for the shelling, while Damascus flatly denied any involvement and saw external powers working to destabilize the region.

The official Syrian stance, shared through the state-run news agency Sana, expressed concern about various parties attempting to undermine regional stability for their own interests. Damascus also could not confirm the veracity of reports concerning shelling aimed at the Israeli side. Later, Syria expressed strong reproach for Israeli air raids, considered a flagrant violation of sovereignty, and urged for peaceful resolution of tensions in the region.

The projectiles fired from Syria landed in vacant areas in the north of Israel, causing no damages. Villages on the Golan Heights experienced air raid sirens, an area held by Israel since 1967 and annexed in 1981. These attacks marked the first projectiles hurled from Syria into Israeli territory since the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights documented intensive explosions in southern Syria, notably in the city of Kuneitra and the province of Daraa. Agricultural zones were reportedly hit, but no casualties were reported. The Israeli attacks targeted weapons of the Syrian authorities, according to the observatory.

Context Clues:

Syria and Israel have been involved in ongoing conflicts, with the most recent exchange prompted by rockets fired from Syrian territory towards Israel on June 3, 2025. Though the rockets resulted in no injuries, Israel responded with retaliatory actions, targeting regime-associated weapons in southern Syria. The Syrian government, under new leadership, continues to face internal challenges in consolidating control over armed groups, causing ongoing instability in the region that threatens security along Syria's borders.
