New Horizons: White Helmets Merge with Syrian Government
Syrian White Helmets Integrated into the Ministry's Operations
The Syrian Civil Defense, popularly known as the White Helmets, are taking a monumental leap into the future. Two years after the Syrian civil war's outbreak, this brave organization emerged, its work receiving worldwide acclaim. This incredible team is now integrating the government apparatus, poised to become a major force within a ministry.
Following the collapse of dictator Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, the White Helmets have begun assimilating into the new government system. In a celebratory announcement, they proclaimed, "This integration marks a new phase in our epic journey." Syrian interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa appointed the head of the Syrian Civil Defense, Raed Saleh, as Minister of Civil Defense at the end of March.
The White Helmets’ humanitarian relief programs in Syria will be relocated to the newly formed Ministry of Civil Defense, as per the announcement. "Our humanitarian mission transcends the realms of conflict rescue—it continues through our active and unwavering participation in constructing a peaceful, thriving, and harmonious Syria,” they stated.
The Syrian Civil Defense (SCD) was officially established in 2011, as the Syrian civil war raged on. They were the first responders when it came to rescuing victims buried after bombings or even the earthquake in 2023. Over the years, they have received generous donations from nations like Germany, Britain, and the USA. They were honored with the Alternative Nobel Prize in 2016.
The White Helmets were instrumental in assisting rebels during the civil war. Bashar al-Assad labeled them accomplices of the opposition. After Assad's resignation in December, they expanded their operations across the nation. They now participate in investigations for missing persons and mass graves, firefighting, and the rebuilding of damaged infrastructure.
