Syrian UN Special Envoy steps down personally

In a significant development, the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, has announced his resignation from the post. Pedersen, who has been in the role for over six and a half years, will be leaving his position in the near future.

Pedersen's decision comes amidst a political transition period in Damascus, following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December 2024. The transitional authorities, led by Ahmed al-Shara, leader of the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), have faced various security problems. Some of these problems have left thousands dead, with sectarian undertones.

Despite the challenges, Pedersen expressed gratitude to the Syrian people, the Secretary-General, his team, and the Security Council for their support. He stated that given the changes in Syria and the opening of a new chapter in its history, it has been a privilege and his duty to remain in the post. Pedersen also expressed his hope for the Syrian people, stating that they have shown extraordinary courage and humanity throughout the years and deserve a bright day in their new dawn.

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has accepted Pedersen's resignation. No information was found about who will succeed Pedersen as the new UN Special Envoy for Syria.

Meanwhile, in other international news, the Minister of Finance of Israel is currently negotiating with the US regarding the division of Gaza. Netanyahu has denounced as 'outrageous' the speculation on social media linking Israel to the killing of Kirk. The details of these negotiations and the circumstances surrounding Kirk's death remain unclear at this time.
