Syrian residents, numbering 83, are forcibly relocated from Sweida, Jordan.
Jordan Successfully Evacuates Over 195 Jordanian Citizens from Southern Syria
In a significant development, Jordan has successfully evacuated a total of 195 Jordanian nationals from the conflict-ridden Sweida governorate in southern Syria.
According to a statement made by Sufian Qudah, spokesperson for the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, the evacuation took place last week, with 83 citizens evacuated on Wednesday, followed by an additional 112 on an unspecified day. The operation was a joint effort between Jordanian national institutions and Syrian authorities, coordinated with the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.
The evacuees were transported via Syrian Red Crescent buses and entered Jordan through the Nassib/Jaber border crossing. This operation aimed to ensure the safety and timely return of Jordanian nationals who had been displaced due to the intense clashes in Sweida governorate, which have been ongoing since mid-July 2025.
The clashes in Sweida governorate have caused a major humanitarian emergency, with over 93,000 people displaced and critical damage to infrastructure, including power, water, hospitals, and communications. Despite the challenges faced by humanitarian efforts in the region, aid convoys have been allowed by the Syrian Foreign Ministry, though entry and distribution face complex local control and security issues.
Jordan has shown active diplomatic engagement concerning southern Syria, hosting meetings that included Syrian and U.S. officials focused on stabilizing the region, including the Sweida governorate, and on broader reconstruction efforts. However, as of August 2025, there were no publicly confirmed, large-scale evacuations of Jordanian citizens from Sweida governorate or detailed disclosures about coordination with Syrian authorities for such an operation.
It is important to note that the recent evacuations in Syria mentioned in the sources pertain primarily to the eastern Daraa province with no indication of Jordanian citizen evacuations from Sweida. The Jordanian King’s recent visit to Saudi Arabia is also unrelated to evacuation efforts.
This development marks a significant step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of Jordanian citizens in conflict zones, and underscores Jordan's ongoing commitment to diplomatic engagement and humanitarian efforts in the region.
