In the heart of Syria, a momentous event transpired as interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, marked the inauguration of a new chapter for the nation with the signing of the constitutional declaration. This significant step initiates a five-year transitional period following the departure of ruling Bashar al-Assad.

According to the committee that spearheaded the drafting of this transitional constitution, the document incorporates significant rights for women and guarantees liberty for the press and free expression. Speaking on the matter, Abdul Hamid al-Awak, spokesperson for the constitution drafting committee, explained that the constitution ensures "social, political, and economic rights" for women. It also provides "absolute separation of powers" and ensures "freedom of opinion, speech, and press."

During the transitional period, the People's Assembly, comprising a third of its members appointed by al-Sharaa, will be tasked with creating the legislation. Furthermore, an electoral committee will oversee the voting for the remaining members. Al-Awak noted that, during the transitional period, the president will exercise executive power alone, due to the urgency required to manage any challenges that might arise.

The committee, consisting of seven members and two women, was assigned the responsibility of drafting the constitutional declaration in early March by al-Sharaa. To bring an end to al-Assad's rule, fighters associated with al-Sharaa's Islamic militant group, HTS, and allied factions took action on December 8. With the fall of the old parliament, the former ruling Baath party, and the annulment of the 2012 constitution, the old order was shattered.
