Syrian Christians will experience increased security if global powers focus on protecting the minority groups.
In the wake of Bashar Al-Assad's regime collapse, Syria finds itself grappling with an uncertain future. While the new government touts an 'inclusive' approach toward minorities, experts can't help but recall its past ties to radical Islamist groups like Al-Qaeda.
Lately, fierce clashes between pro-Assad militias and the new government have unfolded, painting a bloody and chaotic picture on social media, largely without context or explanation.
The lack of accurate information has led organizations like Open Doors, which advocate for persecuted Christians, to issue a warning about the spread of false news regarding a 'Christian genocide'. According to their statement, this spread of misinformation is a potential threat to the Christian community.
Shortly after Open Doors' Middle East officer, Matthew Barnes, visited some Syrian Christian communities, Spanish news website Protestante Digital spoke with him. Barnes explained that Open Doors is in regular contact with hundreds of churches and church leaders, making them well-informed about the current situation in Syria.
On the 3rd of March, a pro-Assad group launched an attack on the new government's security forces. In retaliation, the new government dispatched reinforcements to the region, leading to violent clashes against former Assad supporters. Unfortunately, bombings in the Syrian coastal area near Latakia and Tartous resulted in the deaths of many civilians, including Alawites and Christians. The death toll is estimated to be in the hundreds. Some even refer to it as a massacre.
However, after investigating the claims, it appears that the majority of Christian deaths were not religiously motivated, but rather connected to the ongoing conflict between opposing factions.
Many Christians are optimistic about the newfound freedom they experienced following the end of the Assad regime. They can now speak openly about politics without fear of repercussions. On the other hand, they remain apprehensive about the new government's radical Islamist ties, fearing that similar acts of violence could recur in their country.
Some individuals continue to praise Assad as a protector of Christians, but experts believe this might be an overstatement. While Assad did offer some level of protection to Christians, this came at the cost of their complete freedom of expression, a common tactic in dictatorial regimes to maintain power.
Regarding the Open Doors statement, misinformation about the alleged massacre of Christians could have negative repercussions for the Christian community. The government may question who is spreading these lies and why Christians are making such claims to the international media.
If attacks on Christian communities continue, many more might choose to leave the country, repeating the mass exodus that has already occurred due to drought, war, and instability.
The international community plays a crucial role in preventing further instability in Syria. By keeping a watchful eye on the situation and denouncing any abuses, the people of Syria will feel safer. If incidents like the recent bombings happen again, the international community should condemn them and demand justice.

War-and-conflicts continue to dominate the political landscape in Syria, as shown by the recent clashes between pro-Assad militias and the new government. General-news outlets, such as Open Doors, have raised concerns about the spread of false news that could potentially harm the Christian community, particularly regarding the alleged massacre of Christians.
The warnings issued by Open Doors are significant, as misinformation about the situation in Syria could have serious repercussions for the Christian community. The government might question the motives behind these claims, potentially leading to repercussions for Christians and questioning their allegiances.
