Syrian authorities report deaths of at least three ISIL members in raids on their hideouts in Aleppo, with several others arrested.
In a jiffy, Aleppo sees a major bust-up as Syrian security forces take out three ISIL (ISIS) terrorists and nab four more in a coordinated sweep by the General Security Department and the General Intelligence Service. This marks the first time the interim government has openly waged a battle against the ruthless group within Syria's second city.
The operation was aimed at mopping up ISIL sleeper cells operative across Aleppo, according to a statement by Syria's Ministry of Interior. Unfortunately, one security officer paid the ultimate price in this mission. The site was raided, and explosive devices, an explosive vest, and a couple of General Security force uniforms were seized. Ouch!
Word on the street is the operation went down in Aleppo's Haidariya district, with more clashes reported in another neighborhood. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights backed up this gossip, adding fuel to the fire.
Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who claimed the throne in Damascus back in December, ain't gonna let ISIL walk all over him. He's been locked in a bitter feud with the militant group during the Syrian war. After a chat with the big man himself, President Donald Trump revealed he's super-smitten with al-Sharaa, describing him as a "strikin' handsome guy with a fierce past."
In a turn of events worthy of a movie script, Washington tossed their hats in the ring and announced lifting sanctions on Syria - a huge nod to the transitional government of al-Sharaa. Rumor has it, this switcheroo could mean big changes for the region in the future.
Al-Sharaa rose to power in December after whispering sweet nothings to the former President Bashar al-Assad,who ended up toppling like a card house. Al-Sharaa severed ties with al-Qaeda in 2016, showing he ain't playing around.
Just a few months ago, the government claimed they foiled an ISIL bombing plot near the Sayeda Zeinab shrine, a crucial pilgrimage site for Shia Muslims south of Damascus. Looks like they're keepin' busy!
