Syria targeted by Israeli military following incoming projectiles

Tensions spiked on June 4, 2025, between Israel and Syria, following a pair of projectiles launched from Syrian territory into Israel, prompting a swift military retaliation. The Israeli Defense Minister, Israel Katz, labeled Syrian President a "direct enemy" for any threats hurled at the Israeli soil.

However, Syria's foreign affairs ministry vehemently denied any responsibility for the attacks and claimed that Syria had never posed, nor would ever pose a threat to regional nations[1][2][4]. The Syrian authorities maintained a continuous stance of peace and stability since the fall of Bashar Al-Assad[3].

Reports suggest that this incident marked the first instance of cross-border strikes from Syria into Israeli territory since Al-Assad's fall[3]. Intriguingly, two unidentified groups—Mohammed Deif Brigades among them— claimed responsibility for the launches[2].

On the Israeli side, no casualties or damages were reported as a result of the projectiles, as they landed in open areas, triggering air raid sirens in parts of the Golan Heights[1][3][5]. Nonetheless, Israeli forces launched artillery strikes in response[1].

Katz urged an immediate end to any hostilities emanating from Syrian territory[2]. Despite the vehement denials from Syrian authorities, Israel insisted on combating advanced weapons allegedly belonging to the Syrian regime[1][2][3].

Since Al-Assad's ouster, Israeli military forces maintained a steady presence in the United Nations-patrolled demilitarized zone in the Golan Heights[2]. Over the years, Israeli forces have executed numerous strikes against military targets in Syria, aiming to prevent advanced weapons from falling into the hands of newly-established authorities[5].

Although US President Donald Trump expressed hopes for a potential normalization of relations between Israel and Syria, experts caution that this prospect remains elusive for the time being[5].

Syria, however, has continued to counter the Israeli actions as a violation of Syrian sovereignty, further aggravating tensions in the region[2]. The Syrian authorities accused numerous parties of attempting to destabilize the region for their own interests[2]. They also expressed a resolve to extend state authority over weapons outside the official institutions' framework[2].
