Syria encounters military action by Israel near Damascus, involving government forces.
New Report: Violence in Syria Threatens Stability Again
Yo, let's dive into the latest chaos in Syria, shall we? Recently, the Druze have been catching some heat in a series of clashes with Sunni Muslim fighters. This bloody feud has left dozens dead in just a few days. NPR's Jane Arraf brings us the skinny on this fresh menace to Syria's precarious peace.
The Druze are one of Syria's largest minorities. They're an offshoot of Shia Islam that has been historically marginalized and persecuted. Their militias control part of Syria's southern provinces and certain towns near Damascus. Since Assad's regime crumbled last year, there've been occasional skirmishes with government security forces, primarily consisting of a militant Sunni Arab group. But things had simmered down - until now.
(ASIDE: Druze communities have faced escalating sectarian violence in late April-early May 2025, with clashes centered around Damascus and the southern Suwayda region. The root causes include sectarian tensions, political vacuum, and the weaponization of religious insults to justify attacks on minority communities.)

JANE ARRAF: A voice recording, supposedly from a Druze individual insulting Prophet Muhammad, went viral on regional media - like this censored version from a Lebanese outlet. It sparked clashes on Tuesday in the Damascus suburb of Jaramana. Syrian government officials said 14 people - Druze and government security forces - were killed. Druze leaders themselves denounced the recording. However, the violence spread to Ashrafiyat Sahnaya on the following day, and then Israel joined the fray. State media claimed that in Wednesday's clashes, 16 government force members were killed.

AMER AL-SHEIKH: (Speaking Arabic).
JANE ARRAF: The area's governor, Amer Al-Sheikh, reported Israeli airstrikes that killed at least one Syrian government fighter and a local resident. Israel regarded the attack as a warning, stating it targeted an extremist group. Israel had hinted earlier this year at launching actions in Jaramana to shield the Druze. In Israel, Druze men serve in the military. The Syrian government and its main backer, Turkey, view the escalating Israeli attacks and incursions within Syria as a threat to the new government's sovereignty and stability. Turkey's president branded the Israeli strikes as unacceptable. The Syrian Druze are divided on the issue of Israeli protection, but most reject it. Syrian state media stated that a truce between government forces and Druze elders was reached after the clashes, and this morning, things remain tense but comparatively calm.
