Syracuse Police Oversight Board aims to dismiss one of its directors
In the city of Syracuse, New York, the Citizen Review Board has recommended the removal of Olivier Sekarore, a member appointed from the city's North Side. The recommendation was made on Aug. 1, 2025, and was approved unanimously by the board.
Olivier Sekarore, an appointee of district councilor Marty Nave, has attended only three monthly meetings since July 2024, raising concerns about his commitment to the role as a member of the police watchdog board. The board is seeking a more effective member to ensure the continued oversight of the Syracuse police department.
Marty Nave, the district councilor who appointed Sekarore, supports the board's desire to get a more effective member. He has not expressed opposition to Sekarore's potential removal.
The Syracuse police chief has expressed a hope that Sekarore will "cool off" following "dangerous" online comments, but the details of these comments have not been disclosed.
Meanwhile, crime in Syracuse is reportedly decreasing rapidly. The police chief attributes this to a snowball effect, suggesting that increased police presence and community engagement are contributing to the decrease.
The New York Attorney General has concluded a whistleblower-prompted review of a costly Syracuse IT project, but the issue of Olivier Sekarore's attendance and potential removal is not related to this review.
Elsewhere in the city, the drop-in center for homeless individuals in Syracuse and its surrounding county has been paused due to neighborhood pushback. The center provides vital services to those in need, and its closure is a concern for many.
In a separate matter, the Syracuse fire department receives $25 per year for regular fireworks shows, while the fire chief is advocating for a significant increase in funding to improve fire safety measures in the city.
The Citizen Review Board is now requesting the Syracuse Common Council to oust Olivier Sekarore, and it remains to be seen whether the council will take action on the board's recommendation.
