New Artificial Turf Pitch at TuS Leutzsch Completed

After months of construction, the new artificial turf pitch at TuS Leutzsch on Rietzschelstraße is now ready for action. The facility, which boasts a 320-meter running track with two lanes and a sprint track with four lanes, was officially inaugurated recently.

The ceremony was attended by Leipzig's Sports Mayor Heiko Rosenthal, club president Kai Hebestreit, and technical director Bryan Sura. The project saw significant financial contributions from various sources. The state contributed 876,000 euros, the city contributed 703,000 euros, and the club contributed 138,000 euros, totalling 1.72 million euros.

TuS Leutzsch, a club with 244 members, will particularly benefit from the new pitch. The members are distributed across five men's, nine youth, and one women's team, with 76 children and youth and 168 adults. In addition to the football department, TuS Leutzsch also has a volleyball department.

Environmental and climate protection aspects were incorporated into the renovation. A substrate designed for rainwater infiltration allows stormwater to be absorbed naturally, reducing runoff. Recycled materials were used in the turf's construction to minimize resource consumption and promote recycling. Measures were taken to reduce heat accumulation on the pitch surface, helping to mitigate the urban heat island effect. Sustainable maintenance practices were implemented to lower water and chemical usage, and energy-efficient lighting systems were installed to decrease electricity consumption and related emissions.

A sustainable, climate-neutral artificial turf from DOMO was used for the pitch. New plantings were added to promote an "ecological balance." Nearly all surface water from heavy rain remains within the planning area and is discharged into a ditch with a time delay. A retention basin was created as a seasonal wetland habitat.

These features collectively contribute to lowering the environmental impact of the sports facility while supporting climate protection goals. Whether it's a friendly match or a training session, the new pitch at TuS Leutzsch is ready to provide a top-notch playing surface for all its members.

The renovation of TuS Leutzsch's new artificial turf pitch incorporates aspects of environmental-science, as seen in the use of a substrate for rainwater infiltration and the implementation of sustainable maintenance practices. The club's commitment to climate-change mitigation is further demonstrated through the selection of a sustainable, climate-neutral artificial turf from DOMO. Despite focusing on sports like football, TuS Leutzsch also acknowledges the importance of nature conservation, as evidenced by the addition of new plantings to promote an ecological balance.
