Synchronized Swimming Masters World Championship in Singapore: Hohlstein Sisters Secure the Title of Vice-World Champions
In the challenging circumstances of competing just two weeks after the loss of their long-time coach and mother, Ingeborg Hohlstein, Silke Hohlstein-Terwesten and Birte Hohlstein-Janssen achieved an unexpected victory at the recent World Championships.
The sisters, who have a nearly 50-year career in synchronized swimming, were rewarded with the vice-world championship title and a silver medal. Their success was marked by a third-place finish in the free routine and a near-flawless performance in the technical duet.
Despite the preparation being hampered by injuries, lack of training opportunities, and constant worry about their mother, Silke and Birte aimed to make Ingeborg proud during their performance. They dedicated the medals they won to their mother, who served as a coach and judge for over 40 years.
Ingeborg held a special place in the synchro family due to her long-standing commitment to the sport. Sadly, she passed away due to dementia. Her son, Nicolas Janssen, traveled to support the sisters emotionally during the World Championships.
The competition was particularly strong, with notable participants from Asia and America, including a 1996 Olympic champion from Japan. The free routine competition proved to be tougher than the technical duet, with Silke and Birte just a few tenths of a point away from silver.
Their new coach, Sascha Janssen, could not attend the World Championships due to financial reasons. Despite his absence, the synchro family provided unwavering support to Silke and Birte throughout the competitions.
This emotional victory marks a significant milestone in the sisters' career, a testament to their resilience and dedication to their sport. They continue to honour their mother's legacy, carrying on her passion for synchronized swimming.
