"Sylvester Stallone discloses abandoned plans for an AI-based 'Rambo' prequel: 'We delayed for too long'."
In a surprising turn of events, the production of the Rambo prequel, initially planned to focus on an AI-based narrative, has been scrapped. The project, which was being produced by Millennium Media, was set to be directed by Antoine Fuqua.
The abandoned prequel, titled John Rambo, was the brainchild of Sylvester Stallone. In an interview with ScreenRant, Stallone shared his unique vision for the character's origins. He intended to portray Rambo as the nicest guy in school, the valedictorian, and the prom king, a stark contrast to the rugged, solitary figure we've come to know.
Stallone also envisioned Rambo as a bon vivant, with a life in Saigon, which would lead to him becoming the way he is in the original Rambo series. The prequel was to focus on Rambo's time with the Green Berets in Vietnam, with a storyline that saw him going to the war thinking it would be a three-week hit-and-run, only to be tortured, captured, and his friends murdered.
To recreate his younger character, Stallone had wanted to use AI technology. However, the prequel team took over the project, causing Stallone's ideas to be scrapped. Noah Centineo, who was set to play the role of John Rambo in the scrapped prequel, has not been confirmed for any future Rambo projects.
Despite the setback, Stallone has expressed interest in another Rambo movie. In September 2019, he mentioned that he'd like to return to the Native American reservation where he grew up for another Rambo film. In 2024, Stallone also stated that he'd like Ryan Gosling to be the next Rambo.
Interestingly, another director, Jalmari Helander, has expressed excitement about making his own Rambo movie. The exact direction of the new prequel remains to be seen, but with Millennium Media still involved, fans of the franchise can look forward to new developments in the near future.
