Sydney’s new heat rules let construction workers stop work at 35°C

New safety rules now protect construction workers in Sydney from extreme heat. The guidelines allow staff to stop work when temperatures hit 35°C or humidity rises above 75%. These measures come from the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU).

The union has set clear limits for outdoor work. If the temperature reaches 35°C or humidity exceeds 75%, employees can halt work immediately. Even below these thresholds, workers must be moved out of direct sunlight if their health is at risk.

The new guidelines aim to reduce heat-related risks for construction workers. Employers must now ensure proper shade, hydration, and cooling measures are in place. Failure to follow these rules could result in penalties under workplace health and safety regulations.
