Switzerland Urges EU to Tighten Animal Transport Rules to Non-EU Countries

The Federal Council has adopted a resolution to enhance animal welfare during transports to non-EU countries. It urges the EU to implement stricter regulations and oversight.

The Council wants the EU to allow animal exports to third countries only if the destination country adheres to WOAH standards. It also calls for clear animal welfare criteria in future veterinary certificates. Additionally, the Council demands that the EU Commission has the power to investigate and prohibit animal exports if violations occur. This move aligns with efforts by countries like Germany to strengthen controls and potential export bans for live animal transports to non-EU countries.

The Council questions the effectiveness of the 2023 decision to withdraw bilateral veterinary certificates for animal exports. It acknowledges that current authorities cannot prevent animal welfare violations in exports to certain third countries.

The Federal Council's resolution, adopted on September 26, 2025, aims to ensure animal welfare in transports to non-EU countries. It pushes for stricter EU rules, enhanced Commission oversight, and better prevention of welfare violations.
