Switzerland Dismantles Denmark in World Championship Semifinals, Advancing to Face USA in Final
Stockholm, Sweden—Switzerland ended Denmark's unexpected tournament run at the World Championship with a decisive 7-0 victory on Friday (25th May, 20:20 CET). The game will be broadcast on ProSieben and Magentasport. In the final on Sunday, Switzerland will face the USA, who defeated host Sweden 6-2 earlier in the day. Sweden will play Denmark for third place on Sunday.
Denmark, who surprised many with their upset win against Germany in the last group game and their breath-taking performance against Canada in the quarterfinals, struggled against the skillful Swiss team in their first-ever World Championship semifinal. NHL player Nino Niederreiter (10th and 18th minute) and Ken Jäger (13th) scored in the opening period, setting the tone for the Swiss dominance. Denis Malgin (38th), Sandro Schmidt (45th), Damien Riat (53rd), and Tyler Moy (54th) added more goals to overwhelm Denmark.
For the USA, Sunday's final will be their first genuine World Championship final since 1960, when they won the title in a round-robin format. Against Sweden, the USA led 4-0 after 40 minutes, with 12,530 spectators in attendance. A quick double strike from William Nylander (46th) and Elias Lindholm (47th) momentarily provided a spark of excitement, but Jackson Lacombe (52nd) and Shane Pinto (56th) secured the USA's spot in the final.
