As the war in Ukraine continues, Switzerland is modifying its refugee policies. Soon, only those Ukrainian refugees who face imminent danger at their place of residence will be welcomed without proper documentation. All others will have to file asylum applications and go through the standard process. However, the Swiss government aims to coordinate with the EU and seek the opinion of the cantons prior to implementation.
For Ukrainians who have already settled in Switzerland, the rules are changing as well. The Swiss government seeks to label regions in Ukraine as "safe" or "unsafe" and will reevaluate ongoing applications based on this designation. According to current information, over 69,000 Ukrainians currently reside in Switzerland with S protection status, but this could change as new S protection applications and returning refugees will be scrutinized more closely.
Meanwhile, the Swiss Federal Council wants to ensure better integration of Ukrainian refugees in the country. Their plan is to increase the employment rate for Ukrainians holding S permits to 50% by the end of 2025, up from the current rate of 38%.
