Switzerland braces for record snow and wild temperature swings this week

Switzerland's weather has taken an unexpected turn. On November 22, 2024, Luzern recorded an unprecedented 42 cm of snow, the deepest November snowfall since records began. Other lowland areas also set new records. A series of disturbances is set to bring more rain and snow next week.

Temperatures will drop significantly next week. Snow levels will fall below 1,000 meters (3,280 feet), with flurries possible at lower elevations later in the week. However, Thursday and Friday will bring a brief respite with exceptionally mild conditions, highs reaching 14 to 18°C (57 to 64°F). The weekend will see more clouds and föhn winds in the Alps. Some models predict snow showers reaching lower elevations. By Tuesday, temperatures on the Swiss Plateau will struggle to reach 4 to 8°C (39 to 46°F), with locally higher temperatures possible.

Until Friday, expect sunny and unusually mild conditions across the country. Over the weekend, temperatures will start to drop, leading to a significant chill next week. Keep an eye on the forecast for potential snow showers at lower elevations.
