Switzerland braces for early snow as winter looms unpredictably
Switzerland braced for potential snowfall as long-term forecasts hint at a harsh winter. Recent record-breaking snowfall in November has raised eyebrows, with more changeable weather expected in the coming days.
Last November, Switzerland experienced unprecedented snowfall, particularly on the 21st and 22nd. Now, international meteorologists warn of a potential disruption in weather patterns, bringing snow to parts of Europe, including Switzerland. Next week could see a shift, with temperatures dropping from Sunday onward.
Earlier long-term forecasts suggested a harsh, snow-heavy winter, with the polar vortex weakening and allowing frigid air to push farther south. The coming days will reveal whether winter is truly poised to make its presence felt, even in the lowlands. While long-range models hint at flurries in Switzerland in the coming weeks, such predictions this far out are unreliable. However, higher altitudes like the Swiss Alps, Val Müstair, Flüelapass, Albulapass, and Gotthardpass could see significant snowfall, with up to 50 centimetres expected above 1600 metres.
After a warm spell, winter threatens a sudden arrival in Switzerland. Changeable weather is expected around the start of next week, with possible precipitation and highs dipping to around 10°C. The coming days will provide clarity on whether winter is indeed set to make its mark.
