Swiss woman fined CHF 5,000 for dodging court mail over condo fees

A woman from Zurich has been fined for repeatedly refusing to collect official court mail. The Federal Supreme Court ruled against her after she ignored letters linked to unpaid condominium fees. Her actions led to legal consequences and financial penalties.

The case began when the woman stopped accepting certain letters at her local post office. Among them were official documents from the courts, sent due to her unpaid contributions to a condominium owners' association. Postal workers noticed the pattern and reported her behaviour to the authorities.

The Federal Supreme Court later demanded an advance payment of costs for her appeal. When she failed to pay on time, the court dismissed the substantive issues of her case. Instead, it focused on her refusal to collect the mail, ruling that this violated the principle of good faith.

Over recent years, around 200 similar cases under her name have reached the highest court. This time, judges imposed a CHF 2,000 administrative fine and ordered her to cover CHF 3,000 in legal costs.

The ruling highlights the legal risks of ignoring official correspondence. The woman must now pay the fine and costs, while the court's decision stands. No further details on similar cases in Switzerland were available in public records.
