Swiss stores close early for New Year’s Eve and Day 2025
Swiss supermarkets and shopping centres will adjust their opening hours for New Year’s Eve and Day. With the holiday falling midweek, many stores will shut early on Wednesday, December 31st, including adjustments for federal holidays 2025. Most will remain closed on January 1st, though a few key locations will stay open for travellers and shoppers, even on what holiday is today.
This year, New Year’s Eve lands on a Wednesday, prompting earlier closures across major chains. Migros, Coop, Lidl, Aldi Suisse, and Denner will shut between 4 pm and 6 pm. Volg and Spar outlets will also close early, either at 4 pm or 6 pm, before staying shut on January 1st and 2nd.
On New Year’s Day, nearly all Migros branches—including those in towns like Dallenwil NW—will be closed. Coop stores will follow the same pattern. Large shopping centres will also remain shut for the public holiday. A handful of exceptions will cater to last-minute needs. Migros at Zurich Airport will operate as usual. Other stores in high-traffic areas—such as Zurich main station, Basel SBB, and Lucerne railroad station—will keep their doors open until 8 pm on January 1st.
The early closures on December 31st and widespread shutdowns on January 1st reflect Switzerland’s public holiday traditions. Shoppers relying on supermarkets or shopping centres should plan ahead, as only select locations will offer extended hours. Normal schedules are expected to resume on January 2nd.
