Swiss small businesses breathe easier as U.S. tariffs drop to 15%
The past months have been challenging for businesses in Central Switzerland heavily reliant on U.S. exports, due to high tariffs. However, a recent agreement has brought some relief. The Central Switzerland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHZ) welcomes the reduction of U.S. tariffs from 39% to 15%. The IHZ, representing 800 small businesses across the cantons of Lucerne, Uri, Schwyz, Obwalden, and Nidwalden, opposes protectionism and advocates for robust international trade. Director Adrian Derungs calls the tariff reduction vital for the survival of many small businesses. The agreement, reached on 14 November 2025, involved Switzerland and the USA, with support from Liechtenstein, Swiss economics minister Guy Parmelin, and U.S. representatives under President Trump. While the reduction brings relief, uncertainties persist due to incomplete details and ongoing political processes. The IHZ welcomes the tariff reduction, which should ease the burden on small businesses in Central Switzerland. However, businesses must navigate ongoing uncertainties as political processes continue.
