Swiss ski resorts battle snow drought as winter fails to arrive
Switzerland is facing an unusually snowless start to the winter season. With only scattered patches of fresh snow, many ski resorts are struggling to open properly. Artificial snow remains the only option for skiers, but even that comes with risks to equipment.
Current snow depths across the country are far below average for December. Most Alpine locations report just 10 cm or less, with visible grass beside the slopes. Only high-altitude areas have over 50 cm, and almost nowhere exceeds a metre.
The lack of natural snow has forced resorts to rely on artificial alternatives. Skiers face restricted access, and the risk of damaging equipment remains high. Without a major shift in weather patterns, Switzerland’s winter season will continue to feel the impact of unusually low snow levels.
