The Latvian national ice hockey team is gearing up for an exciting World Championship in Stockholm, Sweden. Their first match will be against France on May 10, but their opening games have not been easy.

In their first encounter, Latvia faced Switzerland and unfortunately lost with a score of 2:4. The Swiss team scored an empty-net goal in the penultimate minute to secure their victory. The second game against Switzerland was even more challenging, with Latvia losing 1-6. Coach Harijs Vītoliņš commented on the team's performance, noting that they struggled significantly and conceded many goals. He emphasised the need for the team to improve their defensive play and overall effort to compete effectively at the tournament level.

However, there were moments of brilliance in these matches. Fēliks Gavars scored a goal for Latvia in the first game, reducing the score to 3:2. Eduards Tralmaks also contributed with a goal in the same match. In the second game, despite the lopsided score, Coach Vītoliņš admitted he liked the game better, despite the loss.

The Latvian team will face several other formidable opponents in the group stage, including Canada, Finland, Slovakia, Sweden, Austria, and Slovenia. Vītolinš believes the team is in a good state of preparation ahead of final warm-up matches in Norway.

The home team scored first in the game against Finland, but the Latvian team fought back, with Gavars and Tralmaks scoring goals. However, they were unable to secure a victory, losing 3:2.

The Latvian team's group games are scheduled for May 13, 14, 17, 18, and 20. They will be hoping to turn their fortunes around and secure some wins in the coming matches.

Despite the tough start, the Latvian team remains optimistic and determined to make a mark at the World Championship. Their resilience and fighting spirit are sure to inspire their fans back home.
