The image shows an old document with a black and white image of a man's face on it. The text on the paper reads "Fraudes sur les Vins". The man in the image has a serious expression on his face, and his eyes are focused intently on something in the distance. His hair is slicked back and he is wearing a suit and tie. The background of the image is a plain white wall, and the text is written in a bold black font.

Swiss developer jailed for embezzling millions in Valais property scandal

A former real estate developer from Valais has been sentenced to prison for financial crimes involving millions of Swiss francs. Mike Echenard faced charges of embezzlement, money laundering, and breach of trust in connection with property projects in Martigny. The Monthey District Court convicted Echenard of misappropriating funds from insurer Helvetia. He was found guilty of financial mismanagement, aggravated money laundering, and breach of trust. The court handed down a three-year prison term, with one year to be served immediately and the remaining two suspended on probation.

Prosecutor Cindy Kämpf had pushed for a stricter penalty, requesting four years in prison without suspension. Alongside Echenard, his closest business associate was also convicted of financial wrongdoing. The associate received a 16-month suspended sentence and a two-year probation period.

The case centred on the embezzlement of several million francs linked to property developments. Echenard will serve one year in prison, while his associate avoids immediate custody. The court's decision follows a lengthy investigation into the financial misconduct.
