Swiss Alps buried under fresh snow as cities escape winter’s grip

Winter struck hard in the mountains, but urban Switzerland stayed dry. Will icy roads and flurries disrupt travel next?

Swiss Alps buried under fresh snow as cities escape winter’s grip

A fresh blanket of snow covered parts of Switzerland overnight, though most major cities saw little accumulation. The heaviest falls hit the Alps, with some high-altitude areas recording over 20 centimetres. Rail services experienced only minor delays despite the wintry conditions.

The night of Thursday, 20 November, brought the most intense snowfall to mountainous regions. Fionnay and Col du Grand St-Bernard in Valais measured 23 centimetres each, while Meiringen in Bern saw 22 centimetres. Adelboden recorded 18 centimetres, and Engelberg, along with Escholzmatt, received 16 centimetres. Lower amounts fell in Kandersteg (14 cm) and Gadmen (15 cm). In contrast, cities like Geneva, Lausanne, and Basel remained largely snow-free.

The latest snowfall largely spared cities but added to the Alpine area's snowpack. With temperatures plummeting further, icy conditions are likely in the coming days. Forecasters warn of possible flurries in lowland areas, though significant accumulations remain unlikely.
