Swirling Competition for Philippine National Team Positions: Burgos and Remolino Vie for Spots
Triathlon Stars Shine in Sunrise Sprint Lapu-Lapu Race
Two of the Philippines' top triathletes, Andrew Kim Remolino and Erika Nicole Burgos, recently showcased their skills in the Sunrise Sprint Lapu-Lapu race held in Cebu.
In the men's category, Remolino, representing Talisay Luigi Triathlon Group-Go for Gold, secured a dominating victory with a time of 1:10:03. Remolino retained the men's overall title in the race, and he was also the top performer in the 25-29 age group category. Remolino expressed satisfaction with his win, stating that his fitness level has improved, especially in bike.
On the other hand, Burgos, a sports science graduate from the University of the Pilipinas-Diliman, managed to win the women's overall title with a time of 1:20:31. Despite feeling the effects of jetlag, Burgos still managed to win the 20-24 age-group category in the race.
Remolino's win comes after his recent victory in the Ironman Lapu-Lapu Cebu sprint race, highlighting his current competitive form. Kim Andrew Remolino is a notable athlete in the Philippine national triathlon team, having won two silver medals in triathlon and one silver in duathlon at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. He was the best finisher among his peers from the Philippines in those events.
As for Burgos, she added to her impressive resume by winning the gold medal in the mixed relay at the 2023 Cambodia SEA Games. She also secured the silver medal in the aquathlon and the bronze medal in the triathlon at the same event.
The Sunrise Sprint Lapu-Lapu race featured a 750-meter swim, a 20-kilometer bike ride, and a 5-kilometer run. Renz Corbin finished the race in third place with a time of 1:11:41, while Eunice Caluya won the 16-19 age group title with a time of 1:22:37. Cebuana Nicole Marie del Rosario finished the race in third place overall.
With Remolino's recent victories and Burgos' consistent performances, both athletes are expected to continue competing in national and regional triathlon events possibly leading up to the next SEA Games. However, no explicit schedule has been released yet for either athlete related to the Southeast Asian Games or other forthcoming events.
For more information on Erika Nicole Burgos or the full national team schedule, checking official Philippine triathlon federation releases or the Philippine Sports Commission updates closer to the SEA Games may provide more details.
In the future, Erika Nicole Burgos might compete in the SEA Games, considering her exceptional performances in national triathlon events like the Sunrise Sprint Lapu-Lapu race in Cebu. Similarly, Andrew Kim Remolino, having recently won in the Sunrise Sprint Lapu-Lapu race and the Ironman Lapu-Lapu Cebu sprint race, might also represent the Philippines in both national and regional sports events, such as the SEA Games.
