Swimming Pair Taguinota and Garra Secure Third Gold Medals on Day 2 of Batang Pinoy Competition
Swimmers Taguinota and Garra Triumph Anew at 2024 Batang Pinoy
Palawan, Philippines - Swimmers Arvin Naeem Taguinota II and Sophia Rose Garra continued their impressive runs, each securing their third gold medals at the 2024 Batang Pinoy competition held at the Ramon V. Mitra Sports Complex pool.
Beginning with their double gold victories on day one, Taguinota and Garra both achieved their third first-place finishes on Monday, November 25. Taguinota, coached by Olympic swimmer Jessie Lacuna (London 2012 and Rio 2016), clocked 2 minutes and 19.88 seconds in the boys' 12-13 200m LC backstroke, while Garra, mentored by Jenny Guerrero (Sydney 2000), recorded 2:30.00 in the girls' 12-13 200m LC backstroke event.
Meanwhile, Gavin Ti of Quezon City and Zara Mae Chua of the same city ruled the obstacle course race for the boys' and girls' 14-15 class, respectively. Ti completed the course in a swift 54.49 seconds, while Chua claimed the top spot with a time of 1:15.47.
In the mountain bike cross-country Olympic (XCO) division, Aerice Dormitorio dominated the girls' 13-under category with a time of 25:04.74. Dormitorio, part of the famed cycling family coached by her father Dodjie, shared that she was "happy to win the gold" and that she hopes to continue her success in cycling.
Davao City's Shyrah Rizalado topped the girls' 15-under XCO event with a time of 31:01.33, while Iloilo City's Ysabel Jamero emerged triumphant in the girls' 12-13 criterion after recording the fastest finish at 24:48, beating out Lauren Lee Tan of Ormoc City by 1 minute and 32 seconds.
Jamero, a Grade 7 student, discovered her passion for cycling during the pandemic and often joined her father and uncle on outdoor tours.
Aklan dominated the initial pencak silat competitions held at Robinson's Place Palawan, with Kevin Unilongo scoring 9.940 points in the boys' junior novice artistic form and Chantal Jizmundo earning 9.960 points in the girls' division.
At the time of this writing, Quezon City leads the competition with 12 gold, 14 silver, and 24 bronze medals.
