Swimmer Nathan Adrian pursuing uncommon Olympic swimming milestone in Rio de Janeiro
Nathan Adrian Gears Up for Rio Olympics
Three-time U.S. gold medalist Nathan Adrian is preparing for the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he aims to make history and further cement his place as one of America's top swimmers.
Adrian, who is 27 years old, has already won four medals in his Olympic career, including two gold and a silver at the London 2012 Games. Now, he has his sights set on becoming the first American swimmer to win the 100 freestyle in back-to-back Games since 1928.
Adrian expressed confidence in the U.S. officials regarding the safety of the Rio Olympics amid Zika virus concerns. He also stated that there is no mosquito season currently in Rio during the Olympics. U.S. officials have put a bubble over the warm-down pool in Rio for safety.
Adrian finds the idea of being the first American in many years to accomplish a feat in the 100 freestyle romantic. He is promoting Citi's #StandForProgress campaign during the Rio Olympics.
"For me, it's just truly trying to be better," Adrian said.
Adrian made significant progress in both swimming and personal growth during his first two Olympics. Now, he is returning to the pool where he qualified for his first Olympics, CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraska, for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials. The trials begin on Sunday.
Adrian had sponsorship contracts with Speedo and Comcast supporting his swimming career, including his attempt to win the 100m freestyle at the 2016 Rio Olympics for the United States. He was also announced as a featured athlete in ESPN The Magazine's upcoming annual Body Issue.
Adrian believes the U.S. swim team is in a strong position for the Rio Olympics. However, he expressed disappointment with the U.S. medal count at the last Olympics, which he felt did not reflect the nation's strength as a swimming power. He hopes that this year's team will be able to perform at their best and bring home a well-deserved haul of medals.
"I expect young athletes to step up during medal contention," Adrian said. "I have no doubt that we have the talent and the drive to succeed."
Adrian's focus is on the Rio Olympics, but he is also aware of the importance of his role as a role model for younger swimmers. He encourages them to work hard, stay focused, and never give up on their dreams.
"I want to inspire the next generation of swimmers to reach for the stars and achieve greatness," Adrian said. "I'm just grateful for the opportunity to represent my country and compete at the highest level."
