The past few days have seen significant unrest in Gopalganj, Bangladesh, following a violent clash between the National Citizen Party (NCP) and supporters of the banned Awami League. Here's a summary of the current status and updates on this developing situation.

The Interim Government has established a three-member committee to investigate the violence and deaths that occurred in Gopalganj. Chaired by Nasimul Ghani, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the committee also includes additional secretaries from the Ministries of Public Administration and Law and Justice. The committee has been mandated to conduct a thorough inquiry and submit its findings within two weeks.

The violence resulted in at least four deaths and dozens of injuries. The clashes involved law enforcement personnel and Awami League supporters, who opposed a pre-scheduled NCP rally at Poura Park in Gopalganj town. The attackers also targeted government establishments, including the Gopalganj District Jail, and set fire to several locations.

The government has reiterated its commitment to upholding justice and maintaining public order, ensuring that those responsible for unlawful acts are held accountable. The government described the violence as "utterly indefensible" and warned that those responsible would be brought to justice.

NCP leaders have vowed to continue their peaceful, non-violent political programmes but have warned that they will not hesitate to resist if their activities are disrupted by "fascists". Following the attack on their convoy and clashes with AL supporters, NCP leaders took shelter at Khulna Circuit House and later stayed in a hotel. The leaders later left Gopalganj by army's armoured personnel carrier (APC).

The government has stated that the violence in Gopalganj is "utterly indefensible" and those responsible will swiftly face justice. The role of the police in preventing the attack is being questioned by the NCP leader. The scheduled rallies in Madaripur and Shariatpur have been postponed, while the march through Faridpur will continue as planned.

NCP Convenor Nahid Islam has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the government for the arrest of those responsible for the attack on the party's rally and convoy in Gopalganj. The attack was allegedly carried out by supporters of the banned Awami League and its affiliates. Islam has stated that the attack was premeditated and intended to kill party leaders and activists.

Police, army personnel, and four platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed across the city to regain control of the situation in Gopalganj.
