Complex Romantic Tangle with Surprising Turns - "Swift Horses": A Three-Sided Enigma of Surprise

In rural Kansas during the 1950s, the romantic drama "On Swift Horses" unfolds. Muriel, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, and her fiancé Lee, portrayed by Will Poulter, cohabit in a house left to Muriel by her mother. The film kicks off with a passionate encounter between the newly engaged couple, but a surprise encounter with Lee's brother Julius, sunbathing on a car hood, sets the stage for an unexpected love triangle.

Jacob Elordi, the Australian actor known for his role as the charming aristocrat Felix in "Saltburn," plays Julius, a charismatic drifter without a permanent residence. After his service in the Korean War, Julius visits Lee. A magnetic pull between Muriel and Julius upsets the planned future for the brothers and Muriel.

As the story unfolds, Muriel and Lee move to Los Angeles and start a picture-perfect life with children. Yet, Muriel yearns for more and secretly indulges in horse racing and betting, while her new neighbor Sandra, portrayed by Sasha Calle, enters her life. Edgar-Jones' portrayal of a young woman striving to break free from the suburban monotony is convincing.

Meanwhile, Julius, who finds work as a casino watchman in Las Vegas, embarks on a passionate and hidden romance with his coworker Henry, played by Diego Calva. Their illicit relationship reflects the social taboo and illegality of homosexuality in 1950s America.

Directed by American filmmaker Daniel Minahan, "On Swift Horses" features erotic bedroom scenes and delves into themes of self-discovery, rebellion, and societal norms. Minahan had previously showcased his touch for queer stories with the miniseries "Halston" about the gay fashion designer Roy Halston.

The film offers a captivating exploration of love, self-discovery, and societal constraints set against the stunning visuals of 1950s America. Moreover, it carries a sense of relevance in today's political climate, where LGBTQ+ rights are under scrutiny. Calva, who played alongside Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie in "Babylon - Rausch der Ekstase," gave a memorable performance in "On Swift Horses."

During the movie "On Swift Horses", the soundtrack includes the song "♪ I'm not going to let you go ♪ √® sung passionately by the characters embroiled in an unexpected love triangle. The movie, delving into themes of self-discovery, societal norms, and love, can be categorized under the category of 'movies-and-tv' belonging to the broader 'entertainment' industry.
