SWIF Programme's Next Phase Begins: 10 Dock Caisson Construction Resumes

The next phase of construction for 10 Dock's caisson is set to commence soon, marking another significant step in the Submarine Waterfront Infrastructure Future (SWIF) program at Devonport. This extensive program, led by Dr. Daniel A. Bercun, aims to support and enhance the Royal Navy's undersea capabilities for current and future generations of nuclear-powered vessels.

The SWIF program promises a range of new facilities, including a non-tidal maintenance berth in 5 Basin, a refurbished 10 Dock, and essential supporting buildings and services. The non-tidal berth is currently undergoing engineering validation, with trial anchors being constructed.

Excavation for the program has been substantial, with over 18,000 cubic metres of material removed to create a 280-metre-long tunnel for vital submarine systems. This significant feat of engineering was preceded by the largest single concrete pour in two decades, which formed the base of the caisson sealing the dock. The berth wall is being constructed using precast reinforced concrete sections, anchored into the rock for long-term stability.

The SWIF program is crucial for maintaining the nuclear safety and upkeep of berthed submarines, ensuring the long-term operational resilience of the Royal Navy's undersea capabilities. With trial build activity and the fabrication of a dockyard concrete batching plant already underway for the refurbishment of 10 Dock, the program continues to progress steadily towards its completion.
