Hot Weather and Potential Thunderstorms Return Mid-Week in Germany
Hot weather returns midweek - Sweltering temperatures return by mid-week.
Get ready for some melodrama in the weather department! After a weekend of scorching heat and initial thunderstorms, Germany expects a brief respite before the hot air returns. The German Weather Service (DWD) predicts Tuesday highs ranging from 20-24°C in the north, with coastal regions experiencing 18°C and rain. The rest of the country will see temperatures between 25-31°C, with the southern half basking in sunshine, clear skies, and dry conditions.
However, a low-pressure system from southwestern Europe is brewing and set to approach Germany overnight Tuesday, reintroducing the heat for Wednesday. The southern half could see temperatures exceeding 30°C, perhaps hitting up to 35°C along the Upper Rhine. But beware, as this system also brings the risk of severe thunderstorms. "Expect intense thunderstorms hitting western parts of the country by Wednesday night, with the rest of Germany by Thursday," warns DWD meteorologist Tobias Reinartz.
Bavaria and Dresden have already experienced the wrath of these storms, resulting in emergency situations for both police and fire departments. A fire broke out near a municipality in the Upper Palatinate, thanks to a lightning strike, and trees blocked roads in Pfakofen. A thunderstorm in Dresden set a multi-family home's attic ablaze, and a forest section near Goslar, Lower Saxony, has been burning since Sunday evening. Thankfully, firefighters are optimistic that they'll have the fire under control by the end of the day.
More swimming incidents have been reported over the weekend, including an 88-year-old man who was revived after being found lifeless in a lake, and a 79-year-old man who drowned while attempting to return to his pedalo. A 37-year-old man also drowned in Rhineland-Palatinate on Sunday afternoon. The zoo in Stralsund, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, was forced to close on Monday due to predicted thunderstorms, heavy rain, and gusty winds.
From Wednesday night to Thursday, expect cloud cover, showers, and potentially severe thunderstorms, according to the DWD. The northeast will likely remain dry and clear, while the Upper Rhine area cools down to 21°C. The rest of the country will experience highs between 22-26 degrees in the northwest, otherwise between 27-31 degrees.
The weekend seems to offer a mix: "Summer warmth or even heat in the south, relative unease in the north," said the meteorologist. So, pack your sunscreen if you're headed south, and bundle up if you're heading north!
