Germany Sweats Through Record-Breaking Heatwave

A sweltering heatwave has gripped Germany, with many regions experiencing temperatures soaring above 36 degrees Celsius. The western and southwestern federal states, in particular, have been hit the hardest, with some locations forecasted to reach up to 40 degrees Celsius.

On Wednesday, Rheinfelden, Baden-Württemberg, recorded a preliminary value of 37.0 degrees, while Artern, Thuringia, and Schlüchtern-Herolz, Hesse, each saw temperatures of up to 36.5 degrees. The German city of Offenbach, home to the German Weather Service (DWD), reported peak temperatures, although the exact figures are yet to be confirmed.

Frankfurt, in Hesse, notably experienced some of the highest temperatures, with forecasts of 38 degrees on Wednesday and again on Thursday and Friday. Berlin, Leipzig, and Nuremberg were also very hot, with temperatures around 36 degrees, and Stuttgart and Saarbrücken reaching 35 degrees Celsius on Thursday. Düsseldorf recorded a temperature of 33 degrees Celsius on August 18.

Other cities with high temperatures during the heatwave included Cologne (34 degrees), Munich (32 degrees), Leipzig and Dresden (around 35 degrees), and Rostock had the coolest weather among these at around 30 to 31 degrees Celsius.

The heatwave has affected many people in Germany, with the town of Huy-Pabstorf in Saxony-Anhalt recording a temperature of 37.0 degrees. However, the measurement from Huy-Pabstorf needs verification due to the location of the measuring station.

The high temperatures are a result of hot air masses, and the German Weather Service (DWD) has been providing regular reports on the situation. It's important to note that the all-time temperature record for Germany is 41.2 degrees, measured on July 25, 2019, at the DWD weather stations Tönisvorst and Duisburg-Baerl, North Rhine-Westphalia.

As the heatwave continues, it's crucial for everyone to stay hydrated, seek shade, and check on vulnerable neighbours and family members to ensure their safety during these extreme conditions.
