As temperatures soar across Germany, reaching as high as 40°C in some regions, communities in Berlin and Brandenburg are employing various strategies to cope with the extreme heat and protect public health.

**Sun Protection Measures**

Residents are strongly encouraged to take extra precautions to protect themselves from the sun's harmful UV radiation. This includes wearing sun cream, hats, and light, airy clothing when outdoors. The German government advises avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours and staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

**Public Baths and Cooling Facilities**

Public baths and swimming pools have become essential cooling options for the public, particularly during heatwaves. While specific usage figures are not yet available, these facilities are known to be used extensively in German cities during extreme heat.

**Health and Safety Advice**

Authorities have issued heat warnings, highlighting the increased risk of heat-related health problems, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Delaying strenuous activities to cooler parts of the day is advised to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

**Firefighters and Emergency Services**

Firefighters are on high alert due to the increased risk of forest fires and other heat-related emergencies caused by the prolonged dry and hot conditions. Emergency services are also prepared for potential heat-related health crises and are ready to respond to incidents stemming from the extreme weather.

**Community Support**

Several Berlin churches have opened their doors to provide a cool refuge from the heat. Many heat-stricken individuals have been seen trying to secure a spot by the lake or in the swimming pool to cool off, including at the Olympiabad, the Insulaner summer bath, and the Pankow summer bath.

Unfortunately, two separate forest fires were reported in Brandenburg, with firefighters called out to tackle the blazes in Drebkau, Spree-Neiße district, and another in Altdöbern, Oberspreewald-Lausitz district.

Despite the challenges, the spirit of community support remains strong. Barbara Hennig of the Evangelical Church in the Passionskirche offers water, a cool place, conversation, and counseling if necessary. The Klima Mensch Gesundheit portal advises cool foot baths or arm compresses to help lower body temperature, and encourages wearing light, airy clothing.

Experts also advise drinking enough, eating light meals, and consuming fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products on hot days.

As the heatwave continues, authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant, follow safety advice, and look out for one another.

The Commission, aware of the current extreme heat across Germany, might also recommend protective measures related to workers exposed to increased ionizing radiation from the sun, given the prolonged periods of intense sunlight.

Considering the sweltering conditions, it is essential for all to heed safety instructions, not only to protect themselves from the sun's UV radiation but also from potential health risks associated with ionizing radiation at work, as per the recently adopted directive by the European Commission.
