Heatwave Hits Germany: Unprecedented Temperatures Expected

A severe heatwave is sweeping across Germany, with the southern half of the country expected to experience particularly high temperatures. The heatwave, caused by a strong Heat Dome—a high-pressure system—expanding over Europe, is expected to last from early to mid-August 2025.

The heatwave has caught everyone by surprise, as the summer had started slowly. The highest temperatures are expected between Karlsruhe and Pforzheim, as well as along the Upper Rhine and in Mannheim. Some areas are predicted to reach up to 40°C, making it a genuine weather event, not a false alarm.

Weather experts are warning the public about the upcoming extreme heat, particularly for the elderly and young children. Even at night, the temperatures are not expected to cool down much, which can be particularly challenging. The heatwave is also expected to make the air more humid, adding to the discomfort.

The affected regions include various federal states, with cities like Frankfurt expected to see highs up to 38°C. The southwest of the country is experiencing the strongest heat stress, while the northern Baltic Sea coast has relatively cooler temperatures around 30°C. Along the coast, temperatures will drop to around 17°C, and there will be increased rainfall.

After the hot days of the heatwave, some relief is expected starting from Friday, August 15, with widespread thunderstorms. Temperatures are expected to cool down to the mid-20s Celsius by Saturday and continuing into the following week. The heatwave may mark the last significant heatwave of the year, according to weather predictions.

After the heatwave, temperatures are expected to drop, marking the end of the heatwave. However, the south of the country is expected to remain relatively warm, with temperatures around 27°C. It's now really heating up after a summer that was mostly rainy.
