Swedish MEP Proposes Controversial EU Ban on Islamic Headscarves
Swedish MEP Charlie Weimers, from the Sweden Democrats, has proposed a controversial ban on Islamic headscarves, including the hijab, for employees of EU institutions and contractors working on EU premises. The proposal, set to be sent to European Parliament President Roberta Metsola by October 3, 2022, has sparked debate and criticism.
Weimers, whose party has previously advocated for mosque bans in Sweden, argues that the proposed hijab ban would reinforce impartiality, equality, and universality in public service. He also claims it would support women living under Islamic oppression and enhance security during screenings.
Weimers has circulated a petition among all members of the European Parliament to gather signatures for the ban. However, other lawmakers, such as Martin Schirdewan and Hana Jalloul Muro, have criticized the proposal as Islamophobic and divisive. Despite the criticism, Weimers expects broad support for his individual initiative.
The proposed hijab ban remains a contentious issue, with some EU countries already enforcing bans on face-covering garments in public buildings. As Weimers' proposal gains traction, it will be interesting to see how the European Parliament responds and whether the ban receives enough support to become a reality.
