Sweden Calls for EU to Freeze Trade Deal with Israel Amidst Opposition
In a move that has sparked controversy both domestically and within the European Union, the Swedish government has called for a suspension of the EU-Israel trade agreement to increase pressure on Israel to allow unrestricted humanitarian aid into Gaza.
The Swedish Transport Administration, meanwhile, is looking to modernise its rail infrastructure, planning to order ten new locomotives and 91 new carriages. However, a tender for new trains, sleeping wagons, and couchette carriages for the night train between Stockholm and the far north of Sweden did not receive a bid that met its requirements.
The Swedish government's stance on the trade deal with Israel is strongly supported by Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard and her ministry. Malmer Stenergard has reiterated the government's call, describing it as "coordinated and clear."
However, the call to suspend trade benefits with Israel has faced criticism from opposition parties, including the Christian Democrats and the Sweden Democrats, who argue that the government's position is too one-sided and could potentially damage Sweden's political, economic, and diplomatic relations with Israel.
The Swedish government justifies its stance by emphasising the "utterly deplorable" humanitarian situation in Gaza and Israel’s failure to meet obligations regarding humanitarian aid. The aim is to use economic leverage to compel Israel to allow aid access. The decision to pause the trade agreement would mean Israel loses customs benefits from the EU, affecting trade relations until the EU collectively agrees by a qualified majority.
Meanwhile, forest fires are likely across much of southern and central Sweden, according to the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI). SMHI has issued a warning of an "extremely significant risk" of forest fires this week in Oland, parts of Skane, and the area around Gothenburg. People are advised to be aware of the risk of fires being started by barbecues, campfires, sparks from machinery, or lightning strikes.
Commuting and leisure travel have also seen significant increases. Commuting surged by 9.7 percent, while leisure travel among ØresundGO members rose 7.7 percent. The Oresund Bridge's operator, Øresundsbro Konsortiet, stated that the bridge is playing an increasingly important role in everyday life and business in the region. Traffic over the Oresund Bridge reached a record high in the first half of 2025.
The current wagons used by the Swedish Transport Administration are between 30 and 40 years old. To address this, the Swedish Transport Administration plans to put out a new tender for the carriages, which should be delivered by 2030 at the latest.
Ebba Busch, the leader of the Christian Democrats, has been vocal in her criticism of the government's position on the trade deal with Israel, stating that it gives a "one-sided focus." However, Busch has also stated that she had not agreed on the position regarding the trade deal with Israel.
