In a disturbing turn of events, a 51-year-old local man has been arrested in Weimar for damaging or defacing 33 Stolpersteine, the brass memorials commemorating victims of the Nazi regime, since the beginning of the year. The suspect, who does not appear to have any political affiliations or a prior police record, was caught in the act while vandalizing posters for the Achava Festival.

The Stumbling Stones project was initiated by artist Gunter Demnig in 1992 to remember victims of the regime. Each stone bears the life dates of the persecuted individuals engraved. Unfortunately, several Stolpersteine have been damaged again in Weimar overnight, and unknown individuals also tore down several posters of the Achava Festival and defaced a bench with red paint.

Daniel Wagner, head of the Weimar Criminal Police, confirmed the suspect's involvement in the desecration of the Stumbling Stones. The arrested man is also suspected of damaging dozens of Stolpersteine in Weimar since the beginning of the year.

The number of anti-Semitic incidents, including the destruction of Stumbling Stones and desecrations at memorial sites, has increased. This comes as a stark reminder of the importance of preserving and respecting historical memory.

In a positive note, Minister President Bodo Ramelow (Left) and Federal Commissioner for Culture Claudia Roth (Greens) planted two new memorial trees from the project '1,000 Beech' in Weimar. The trees had been damaged several times before.

Meanwhile, in Erfurt, 15 Stumbling Stones were laid in the old town on Thursday afternoon, remembering Erfurters persecuted and murdered by the regime from 1933 onwards.

Links to videos show the laying of the 15 Stumbling Stones in Erfurt and the desecrations in Weimar, serving as a stark contrast and a call to action for everyone to stand against hate and intolerance.

The suspect will now be investigated for politically motivated property damage. As we move forward, it is crucial that we continue to remember and honour the victims of the regime and work towards a society that values diversity and respect.
