Suspected Houthi Drone Assault Targets Israeli City of Eilat
In a recent escalation of tensions, a drone originating from Yemen crashed in the southern city of Eilat, Israel on Thursday. The drone, which caused material damage but no casualties, is believed to be the latest attack on Israel from Yemen's Houthi rebels.
The incident follows a series of 12 strikes carried out by Israel on Tuesday against Yemen's port of Hodeidah. The Houthis have targeted vessels in the Red Sea and have been conducting drone and missile attacks against Israel since October 2023, following Israel's genocidal war on Gaza.
The front lines in the Yemen war have been largely frozen since 2022. However, Israel's recent strikes on Yemen have resulted in the death of dozens, intensifying the conflict. Thursday's attack comes four days after Israeli strikes on the Yemeni capital and the northern province of al-Jawf killed more than 40 people, according to the Houthis.
The Israeli military did not specify who launched the drone, but the Houthi group (Ansar Allah) claimed responsibility for the drone attack on Qatar on Wednesday, September 9, 2023. The Houthis have controlled much of northern Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, since September 2014. They have fought against the country's internationally recognised government, as well as a Saudi-led coalition, for years.
It is worth noting that the UK and the US have not conducted attacks on Yemen since May, after the US agreed to a ceasefire deal with the Houthis. The specific details about the casualties and damage from Israel's recent strikes in Yemen are not provided.
The drone fell in the hotel zone of Eilat, causing concern among tourists and locals alike. This is not the first time Israel has conducted attacks on Yemen, with an Israeli air strike in late August killing Ahmed al-Rahawi, the prime minister of the Houthi government in Yemen's capital, Sanaa.
As tensions continue to rise, both sides are urged to de-escalate the situation and work towards a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Yemen.
