Suspect taken into custody by Montreal police following purported assault of Jewish father in a public park
Montreal: 23-Year-Old Charged with Assaulting Jewish Father in Park
A 23-year-old Montreal resident, identified as Sergio Yanes Preciado, has been charged with assault causing bodily harm following an incident in a park on August 8, 2025. The assault took place in Dickie Moore Park, located in the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough of Montreal.
According to reports, Yanes Preciado allegedly sprayed a 32-year-old father with water from a bottle before pushing him to the ground and proceeding to punch and knee him. The incident, which was partly captured on a 28-second video shared widely online, occurred at a splash pad in the park.
The suspect appeared briefly before a Quebec court judge from detention, and the Crown has objected to his release, scheduling a bail hearing for the following day. A psychosocial evaluation of the accused has also been requested by the Crown.
The investigation is ongoing, and no further details about the nature of the assault have been provided. Police will submit their investigation report to the Crown prosecutor's office, although the identity of the prosecutor handling the case has not been revealed.
The alleged assault has drawn significant public and political attention, including condemnation from Canadian and Israeli officials, amid concerns about rising antisemitism. Prime Minister Mark Carney and Quebec Premier Francois Legault have both spoken out against the incident.
It is important to note that the nature of the charges, if laid, has not been disclosed. The suspect's arrest took place on Monday, and the incident occurred on Friday afternoon. The victim was with his young children at the time of the assault.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of promoting understanding, respect, and safety in our communities. As the investigation continues, we hope for a swift resolution and justice for the victim and his family.
