A 33-year-old man, identified as Jared Joseph Powell, residing in Los Angeles, was apprehended for allegedly carrying out a spree of murders targeting homeless individuals in the city. The arrest took place just a day after authorities appealed for assistance in identifying potential suspects following the discovery of three deceased homeless persons.
As per Chief Moore, Powell is also under suspicion for involvement in a robbery in San Dimas, a city located approximately 28 miles east of Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles authorities, the first murder occurred around 3 am on a Sunday in the streets; the second incident was reported at 5 am on a Monday, and a third person was killed midweek at 2:30 am.
Chief Moore affirmed that all homicides occurred under similar circumstances and assumed that each victim was alone when attacked, either on a sidewalk or in an alleyway. No details about the motive behind the murders have been revealed yet.
Based on preliminary investigations, it appears that a lone individual approached the victims in their sleep, discharged a weapon, and subsequently disappeared from the scene. No reporting of physical or verbal confrontations preceding the incidents.
The crime scenes were scattered across several locations within the city, with at least one occurrence near Skid Row, a notorious Los Angeles landmark renowned for its large homeless population.
Bass, the Los Angeles Mayor, expressed concern over the daily challenges faced by the city's homeless community, explaining that approximately four to five individuals become homeless every day, with some tragically succumbing to various perils, including violence.
As further details emerge, this story will be updated.
