Suspect in the murder of Kirk voluntarily surrendered to police peacefully, as per the sheriff, fearing they might be shot.
In a shocking turn of events, a 22-year-old Utah man named Tyler Robinson has been charged with capital murder for the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The shooting, which took place on September 10, has left the nation stunned and exposed deep political divides.
Robinson, a prominent conservative activist and confidant of President Donald Trump, was credited with energizing the Republican youth movement and playing a significant role in Trump's win back of the White House in 2024. However, in a dramatic turn of events, Robinson allegedly took the life of the man he once supported.
Following the shooting, Robinson agreed to surrender peacefully to avoid a SWAT team. His quiet and somber demeanour was evident when he turned himself in at the Washington County Sheriff's office.
Investigators found a chilling note in Robinson's apartment, which read, "I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I'm going to take it." Robinson's romantic partner, who is transgender, has been fully cooperating with investigators and is not suspected or under investigation for assisting in the assassination.
Robinson's parents recognized their son when authorities released a picture of the suspect. Confronted, Robinson reportedly expressed remorse, saying, "To be honest I had hoped to keep this secret till I died of old age. I am sorry to involve you."
The texts sent by Robinson to his partner did not include timestamps, leaving it unclear how long after the shooting they were sent. In one text, Robinson wrote, "I had enough of Kirk's hatred and that some hate can't be negotiated out."
Utah Valley University is conducting a review of security on the day of the attack. Law enforcement officials are also investigating whether others knew about Robinson's plans or helped in the shooting.
The shooting of Charlie Kirk has left the Utah Valley campus reeling. The incident has once again brought to light the deep political divides that exist in the country. As the investigation continues, the nation waits for answers and closure.
