Suspect in Charlie Kirk's murder penning a note discovered beneath the computer keyboard
In a shocking turn of events, a 22-year-old man named Tyler Robinson has been charged with aggravated murder for the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The shooting took place on September 10, and Kirk died soon after.
The murder occurred at Utah Valley University in Orem, approximately 64 kilometres south of Salt Lake City. Robinson is accused of shooting Kirk in the neck with a bolt-action rifle from the roof of a nearby campus building.
Investigators are also looking at whether anyone knew of Robinson's plans before the shooting. DNA on a towel wrapped around a rifle found near the scene of the shooting matches that of the accused, Tyler Robinson. Furthermore, FBI Director Kash Patel stated that DNA evidence has linked Robinson to the rifle and a screwdriver recovered from the rooftop where the fatal shot was fired.
Robinson was also charged with felony discharge of a firearm and obstructing justice. He is reported to have discarded the rifle and clothing and asked his roommate to conceal evidence. His romantic partner has been cooperative with investigators.
Kirk was a dominant figure in conservative politics and became a confidant of President Donald Trump. His death has sparked a wave of reactions, with some conservatives seeking to upend the lives and careers of those who disparaged Kirk after his death. On the other hand, JD Vance expressed a desire for national unity while hosting Charlie Kirk's radio show after Kirk's death.
The FBI is investigating a gaming chatroom on Discord involving more than 20 people in relation to the Charlie Kirk assassination. However, FBI-Leiterin Kash Patel has made no specific public statements about a possible connection of Tyler Robinson to the chatroom on Discord; connections and messages related to Robinson have been described by other sources like the Governor of Utah and the police, who mentioned that Robinson's profile on Discord has been linked to the incident.
Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray announced that Robinson's DNA was found on the trigger of the gun used to kill Kirk. The FBI is working diligently to uncover a motive for the attack. Despite calls for greater civility, some who opposed Kirk's provocative statements about gender, race, and politics have criticized him after his death.
More information may come to light once Robinson appears for his initial court hearing. It remains unclear whether Robinson has an attorney who can speak on his behalf. Utah's governor stated that more information may come out during this hearing.
